Killer app: Fuller in zoo balancing act

Fuller Davies has continued to bolster its green credentials after printing its first job on carbon-balanced paper, part of a project for Colchester Zoo. The Ipswich-based business has produced an initial run of 10,000 souvenir guides, which, according to the zoo, are currently "selling very well".

How was it produced? The guides are printed on the firm’s B2 Heidelberg CD 74 and B1 Roland 700 presses using vegetable-based inks. Howard Smith’s FSC-certified Regency stock was used throughout with the 300gsm grade used for the cover, printed on the CD 74, and 170gsm on the 700-printed text pages.

What challenges were overcome? According to Neil Stones, managing director at Fuller Davies, the main challenge was "adjusting the mindset much like the first time we printed jobs on FSC- and PEFC-certified paper. Apart from that, it was a very straightforward process".

The company had worked with Howard Smith Paper previously and more recently, Fuller Davies jointly hosted a series of green workshops with the merchant for its customers in a bid to help them make more informed choices when it comes to the environment. Stones added: "We believe strongly in environmentally conscious printing and print buying and want our customers to feel they are in safe hands when they entrust their work to us."

What was the feedback? Feedback from Colchester Zoo has been very positive. Fuller Davies already carries out work for the zoo and the carbon-balanced project was an extension of that relationship. Anthony Tropeano, zoological director at the zoo, said it was "delighted" that the job could be printed on carbon-balanced paper therefore having "as little impact on the
environment as possible".
