John Good establishes digital arm with £500,000 investment

Theatre programme specialist John Good has invested £500,000 to establish an in-house digital operation.

Over the past few months a Kodak Nexpress SX2700 digital printer, a Duplo iSaddle stitcher, a Duplo DC-646 slitter-cutter-creaser and an Autobond laminator have been installed at the Coventry-based company’s 2,230sqm premises.

The firm said that the new equipment will make it more economical to produce significantly lower volumes, which will enable it to produce work for an increased range of customers.

John Good operations director Simon McKay said: “We were previously sending digital work out but we’ve now brought it in-house.

“Our core business of programme work requires short runs, and it’s more efficient to do this digitally than it is to do on our litho machines.

“The new kit has given us the ability to turn work around more quickly and we’ve also now got a more multi-skilled team so we’re seeing the benefits of work getting converted more quickly.”

The Nexpress SX2700 has replaced a four-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 litho press, which was sold on. The firm still operates a four-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 and a 10-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 on its litho side.

The business has also invested in Infigo Software’s Catfish MegaEdit platform, which will soon enable it to offer a basic web-to-print service for theatre programmes alongside items such as postcards, leaflets, compliment slips and booklets.

John Good has around 130 staff, working across three sites in Coventry, London and Oxford, and a turnover of just over £11m. Its clients include individual theatres and theatre companies across the UK.
