HRH praises Shotton's move to 100% recycled production

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales visited UPM's Shotton Paper mill on Monday (12 July) and praised the mill on its conversion to 100% recycled fibre production.

It was a return visit to the Deeside mill which he opened in 1985. He said he was delighted by the mill's conversion to 100% recycled fibre production, and hoped this would prove the doubters wrong who say it is not commercially viable to recycle paper.

"I hope that this initiative will also help to spread the message about the benefits of recycling," he said. The 84m (EUR127m) project has over increased Shotton's production capacity by 321,000 to 500,000 tonnes per year. The extra 321,000 tonnes increases UK's overall recycling capability by 30%.

Overall it will process 700,000 tonnes of paper per year (PrintWeek, 4 October 2002). Shotton's recycled fibre pulp facility forms part of the 124m newsprint-recycling project, for which UPM received 17m in aid from the Government's Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP).
