Hitachi unveils the electronic future of paper

The printing industry may be witnessing a new digital revolution with the worlds first commercial launch of a 64-colour electronic paper.

Japanese electronics firm Hitachi is to bring it to the market in 2006, in a 178x178mm format. The launch will be followed in 2007 by 356x356mm and 533x533mm versions.

The 3mm-thick paper was unveiled at a trade show in Tokyo on 26 November in a 162x181mm format weighing around 100g.

The paper will be powered by tiny lithium batteries, but the sample on display also featured solar panels, giving the paper several months' worth of autonomous power.

A spokesman said that applications for the paper included advertising, notice boards and photographs.
