Heidelbergs Ipex kit to compete on short-runs

Heidelberg will focus on improved production efficiency at Ipex with enhanced pre-press, press and post-press products, and additions to its Prinect workflow suite.

Prinect Integration System is new central JDF controller that manages all production functions while Prinect Pressroom Manager handles all pressroom automation. In big sites, Prinect Integration System will act as an overall controller of pre-press workflow system Printready and Pressroom Manager.

Press developments include the first 10-colour B3 press, the Speedmaster SM 52-10-P, due to ship in Q4 2006. Other pressroom innovations include the Anicolor inking unit, which it said will give offset a competitive edge over digital for short-run jobs.

It said the Anicolor (pictured), for the four-colour SM 52, would cut start-up waste by 90% and raise press capacity by 25%.

It has no inking zones, fewer rollers than a conventional unit, temperature control and a chambered blade system to reduce ink change and cleaning times.

"We'll challenge the thoughts of those unsure whether to go digital or offset for short runs," said director for engineering and manufacturing Jrgen Rautert.

The 10-colour press follows the success of its first long perfecting (eight-colour) B3 press, which was revealed at Drupa 2004.

Heidelberg also announced the successor to CutStar, the CAN sheeter, which can be configured to the Speedmaster XL 105 and CD 74 series as well as the SM/CD 102.

A 10-colour long perfecting version of the CD 74 will be shown with dedicated coaters for each side of the sheet.

Post-press innovations include cold foil finishing, the Eurobind 4000 and Diana X folder gluers. The Stitchmaster ST 450 will replace the 400 saddlestitcher.
