Heidelberg saves energy and waste with ink drying add-on

Heidelberg has unveiled a new drying peripheral to help cut energy consumption and paper wastage by monitoring ink drying levels.

DryingMonitor determines the amount of water-based coating applied in the coating unit and equips the delivery and any drying units with sensors, which record drying-related parameters.

These include the amount of water introduced by the coating, air volume and the temperature and humidity of the incoming and outgoing air.

The monitor uses this information to produce a recommendation for the press operator, indicating whether a lower or higher dryer output should be used.

Heidelberg claim that most dryers are operated at a 20-25% higher output than is necessary.

The manufacturer also claimed the monitor would help eliminate piled sheets sticking together due to inadequate drying or the coating yellowing due to excessive heat.

The DryingMonitor will be available on the Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 from September 2008, with plans to make the system available for additional press models in the future.

Heidelberg will be showcasing the DryingMonitor at Drupa 2008, which runs from 29 May to 11 June in Düsseldorf, Germany.
