Wide-ranging strike action in Finland has been suspended as of today (8 April).

The industrial action organised by SAK, the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions, began last month and has impacted the export of paper from Finnish mills.

The unions are opposing government cuts to working conditions and social welfare.

SAK President Jarkko Eloranta said the government has advised SAK that it will not seek any settlement with employee organisations while strikes continue.

“No new decisions were made to continue strike action, and we shall now give the Orpo-Purra Government an opportunity to react,” he said.

SAK’s executive board will reassess the ongoing situation on 18 April.

The strike action has impacted Finland's port and freight network.
