FedEx Office boosting digital POD investments

Looking to take advantage of opportunities presented by the consolidation in the traditional commercial print industry as well as the growing interest by companies of all sizes in managed print solutions, FedEx Office this week revealed it has deployed nearly 8,000 new printing devices in the past 20 months at its locations across the US and Canada.

Included in that investment are Agfa Graphics' Jeti 3020 Titan inkjet printers and Zund G3 M-2500 digital table cutters - all of which will be critical for high quality, grand format production print runs, the company said.

In an interview with PrintWeek, Anthony Norris, FedEx Office VP of product and e-commerce marketing, explained, "Most of our recent investments are in digital but we still see a long runway for offset as well. Just as important is our investment in the digital front-end that customers interact with - for us it's simply stickier; right now 40% of our business is coming through digitally. And we can control quality better with end-to-end automation - we're now investing in three to four software upgrades a year."

Aimee DiCicco, VP of sales for FedEx Office, added that what's helping the company's growth is the interest among even small firms in better controlling their print spends. "It's not just the largest customers who want to look at a managed print solution," she added

"And it's not the conventional type of heavy equipment in one centralized location - it's a more variable, scalable model that can survive in a print-on-demand world."

FedEx Office is also having success stepping into managed print for large corporations, having recently announced a four-year deal with Boeing that begins March 1 to provide critical operations, sales, and large/grand format printed materials.

DiCicco noted the Boeing deal won't require specific FedEx Office investments in staffing or equipment, adding, "We support large commercial customers with networked managed print solutions every day so our infrastructure is in place to support Boeing - but of course infrastructure investments are ongoing."

In terms of areas of growth for FedEx Office, Norris cited large-format displays, adding, "For some time we have had more large format capacity in the US than any other signage provider, so it's a very important part of our business and we continue to see tremendous opportunity in the space."
