DPS Digital hires printer returning to work after brain tumour op

DPS Digital has offered a permanent job to a printer who had to give up work five years ago to have a brain tumour removed, following his completion of a work placement scheme.

The Sleaford-based business has hired Kevin Pinder, who had been working in the print industry in London for 11 years when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December 2009.

Pinder had an operation to remove the tumour the following month and then moved to Sleaford, in Lincolnshire, to recuperate.

Upon feeling well enough to return to work, Pinder attended sessions at his local Job Centre Plus, but found it difficult to find a job that would enable him to use his skills.

Job Centre Plus advised Pinder to contact the Shaw Trust, a national charity that runs a work placement scheme, and he was placed with DPS Digital.

The scheme, which runs for 12 weeks, guides people who need additional support as they start or return to employment.

Pinder successfully completed his placement with DPS Digital and has been taken on permanently by the firm. He now works four mornings a week in its finishing department.

Pinder said the part-time hours have enabled him to work while continuing his recovery and also enjoying quality time.

“Working at DPS Digital has really boosted my confidence. The team have supported me as I returned to work after a difficult few years,” said Pinder.

“I hadn’t realised quite how much I missed the workplace camaraderie during my time away, so it’s nice to get back into it.”

DPS Digital managing director Matt Savage added: “I’m really pleased that Kevin joined us for his work placement. I hope we’ve helped him get back into the routine of work and supported him as he’s built up his confidence.

“When he joined us I was immediately impressed by his skills and commitment and together we have overcome some of the challenges he faced when he returned to the workplace for the first time in many years.

“I am really pleased to be able to offer Kevin a permanent position as a member of the DPS team.”

DPS Digital is part of DPS, which also consists of litho arm DPS Litho, wide-format operation DPS Fine Art and Izzy Rose, which specialises in personalised photobooks, calendars and canvasses.

The business was set up by Savage in 2004 and now employs 14 staff at its sites in Sleaford and Boston, also in Lincolnshire.

It operates Xerox digital kit and Epson wide-format machinery as well as a range of finishing equipment from Morgana and Duplo. Its clients include HomeLet, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and Moonpig.
