CPM, based in Leighton Buzzard, has placed Europe's largest single order for Indigo UltraStream 2000 digital offset presses.

The firm has installed three in a 1m-plus investment, and has a further two on order as part of its three- to five-year development strategy, which has already seen the company move to its new 1,625m2 purpose built 3.5m premises.

The seven-colour UltraStreams have become CPM's bespoke colour mailing department, along with its 12 single-colour laser printers. Operating 24 hours a day, CPM now has the capacity to produce over 50,000 A3 four-back-four sheets per day.

CPM marketing director Eric Suthill said that the company's move into digital colour was in response to changing customer requirements. "The mailing market has reached a plateau, people are beginning to ignore pieces on their doorsteps. Targeted four-colour work is now the key, plus with the UltraStreams we've got the database technology to make more personalised and specific work."

He added that the investment was undertaken after consulting many of CPM's blue-chip customers: "Some of our clients have specific colour needs for their logos and identity. We aren't restricted to just CMYK."
