Cowan Print eyes growth following plant and machinery investment

Scottish printer Cowan Print has acquired a new factory, almost four times the size of its previous facility, and invested in a second Heidelberg Speedmaster SX52-5 as it targets 25% turnover growth.

The £1m turnover company hopes to achieve its growth goal over the coming financial year after moving to new 930sqm premises in Kilsyth, near Glasgow, 500 yards away from its former building.

Cowan Print’s previous unit was leased but the new facility has been bought to give the company space to grow and save money on rent. The new factory has been modernised and repainted as well as having LED lighting and a new heating system installed.

"We wanted a second press but we just didn’t have the room in the factory, it was too small and too tight," said managing director Craig Cowan. "We wanted to stay located in this particular town. It’s a good location near Glasgow and Edinburgh. We’re very central where we are."

When it came to selecting Cowan Print's second press, Cowan opted for the same model as the company's existing Heidelberg SX-52. "It’s got great automation on it, it’s really quick to set up and it can handle smaller jobs. Press Centre is a great software and the whole machine is automated," he said.

A new operator will be recruited to work with the latest Speedmaster and all current staff will be transferred to the new site.

Cowan Print offers digital and litho printing, a wide range of finishing including laminating, collating and stitching as well as design and delivery. It has been in business since 1987 and currently operates a two-shift production system.

Cowan said the firm aimed to achieve its turnover goal by taking on more work from existing customers as well as gaining more contracts with new customers. "We will be producing traditional print products such as magazines, brochures and reports. All the usual stuff but more of it," he added.
