Contego invests in Italian operations

Contego Packaging is continuing its investment programme with new equipment installations in its two Italian plants.

The UK-headquartered firm has installed a six-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster SM52 LX Anicolour with a Kama Pro Cut 53 die cutter at its Cervia facility and at its Piacenza site the company has invested in a new MPS two-colour foil press.

Chief executive Tom Reid said that the investments would help the company continue to respond to customer and market demands.

He said: "The Speedmaster sits really nicely between digital and conventional in terms of run lengths and a lot of our customer shave been asking us to get into a position where we can be more competitive on the short run side, so it’s perfect.

He added: "The MPS replaces old equipment that was actually giving us less than half the output that we now have the capacity for so we can now improve our service levels and quality as well as introduce new, innovative foil products."

The investments form part of an ongoing growth strategy for the company, which was bought by Platinum Equity along with its sister company Nampak Healthcare in December 2010.

The strategy saw Contego, which produces cartons, leaflets, labels and blister packs for the pharmaceutical industry, sell its food and beverage cartons business to US firm Graphic Packaging for £81m earlier this year.

Reid said: "We have made good progress over the last 12 to 18 months and we are introducing new and exciting products.

"We are continuing to grow our healthcare business and we continue to look at various opportunities although what those are I can’t say at the moment," he added.

Contego Packaging employs around 1,000 people across 10 facilities including one in Ireland, four in the UK, two in Germany and two in Italy.
