Chairmen of the CIP4 workgroups, which include pre-press, MIS and finishing are meeting from 23-26 May to thrash out the final details of the new spec.
JDF 1.3, which will be published in September, includes beefed up sections on secure messaging, web printing and packaging.
"It's a good step in the gradual evolution of covering all print production," said CIP4 chief executive Martin Bailey.
"They will look at areas we haven't properly covered before," he added. "These include pre-flighting and secure messaging between products so you can get more authentication of who's sending data.
"So far it's been completely open because of the assumption you are working behind a firewall in print production."
