Canon to target growth in digital mono presses for 2009

Digital print manufacturer Canon will be targeting growth in the digital mono market this year, according to its new head of marketing for the UK, Trevor Dodsworth.

"In 2009, there has been a slight shift in focus for Canon. We've already had success in the Corporate Reprographics Departments (CRD) arena, but we're investing more into that market. And mono is allied to it" he said.

The company is also placing an increased focus on in-plants with more than 3,000 operating in the UK, Dodsworth said.

Earlier this month, Canon launched three mono machines into the imagePress range: the 1135, 1125 and 1110 can print at speeds of up to 8,100, 7,500 and 6,600iph an hour respectively.

The machines have been tailored to fulfil demand for digital mono and, according to research from the manufacturer, around a third of production print is black-and-white only, while 42% of this is carried out digitally.

Dodsworth said: "There is a key opportunity there as in-plants are very digitally focused. We have a good presence there, as do other manufacturers, but with the new imagePress machines we're aiming to boost that.

"We've tested the water with the Digimaster machines in the past but our view with the imagePress is that we can establish a stronger presence in the mono market.

"It's a very strong proposition. There are a lot of competitors now. There was previously a lot of clear blue water in mono but that's been diminished now."

Dodsworth added that although the recession had made finance harder to come by, there are other growth opportunities available to companies willing to invest.

"There are new revenue and profit streams to be created by improving your workflow or by investing in web-to-print software," he said.

The new head of marketing also expects Canon to "develop new opportunities", after the group signed a distribution deal with Agfa Graphics.

This deal will see Agfa distribute Canon's imagePress digital colour machines, which includes the imagePress C6000VP, the C7000VP and the newly launched C1+ as well as its range of products in the UK.

"There were logical synergistic lines by working with Agfa. It's very much a partnership and we can use their expertise to develop new opportunities," he said.
