Breckland wins Green Apple award

Breckland Print has been recognised for cutting waste to landfill by more than half by scooping a silver prize at the 2007 Green Apple Awards for environmental best practice.

The Attleborough-based firm, part of the Colchester Print Group, was also praised for its ongoing efforts to eliminate chemicals during platesetting by using Fuji's processless Pro-T plates with a Heidelberg Topsetter PF 102.

It also cut water consumption, with a 60% reduction in the skips the printer sends to landfill.

Breckland pressroom manager Peter Ditton told printweek.com that the 60-staff firm now uses 15 skips per year to dispose of landfill waste, "compared to 35 in 2000".

He said the award was recognition of "ongoing efforts" to become a more environmentally friendly operation.

"We aim to be carbon neutral by October 2008 and will continue to work at securing ISO 14001," added Ditton.

The Green Apple Awards are organised annually by The Green Organisation, which recognises, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world.
