Art print professor's sponsorship at CFPR extended by HP

Stephen Hoskins has been appointed as Hewlett Packard Professor of Fine Print at the University of the West of England (UWE) for a second five-year term.

Hoskins, who is director of UWE's Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR), said that the centre would look at how it could introduce personalisation to print finishing using digital technology. Another area that CFPR will research in collaboration with HP labs in Palo Alto is rapid prototype 3D printing.

"I am delighted to have this new funding, and to have HP behind us," said Hoskins. "It's great to have its commitment to our ongoing research work."

CFPR has collaborated with HP research labs in Barcelona, Bristol and San Diego for the past 10 years as part of the firm's work in the fine art sector, where it has also worked with Museo del Prado, Madrid; the National Gallery, London; and The Louvre, Paris.

"The CFPR brought a wonderful mix of skill to the programme; a deep understanding of traditional print-making techniques with a passion for pushing digital printing technology to produce extraordinary results," said HP Labs Bristol director of media technologies Huw Robson. "The other groups were concerned with the immediate challenge of very accurate reproduction of classic paintings. The CFPR complemented this with its deep understanding of the creative process itself and the subtle but important interaction and ‘tactility' of the final print."
