Argos draws on printers for biggest catalogue yet

Argos has produced its biggest catalogue yet the autumn/winter 2002 volume is a whopping 1,122pp and weighs in at a hefty 1.6kg.

Production of the mammoth project has involved gravure printers across Europe. Some 16m copies of the catalogue are destined for the UK and Northern Ireland, with a further 1m bound for Eire. The separate Argos Additions clothing catalogue is a 6m run.

“The Argos catalogue is more widely read than Harry Potter – seven out of 10 households have a copy,” said an Argos spokeswoman.

The bulk of printing is done on the continent, at printers in Germany, Italy and Scandinavia, although Polestar Purnell did produce some sections. Binding was split across five UK locations, including Artisan in Leicester and Scorpio Print Finishing in Leeds.

Repro was carried out by Beckmann’s specialist catalogue operation in Verona, Italy.

The new catalogue hitting the shops also involves a massive encapsulation project for the individual leaves of the hundreds of display catalogues used in-store across the country.
