APS Group wins BBC work

APS Group has won the print management part of the BBC contract to handle its print requirements, expected to be worth up to 10m over three years, with an option to extend for a further year.

Print management of this work, which includes short-run digital work and larger pieces such as the BBC's internal newspaper Ariel and annual Proms Guide, was previously managed by HH Associates.

The other element to the contract covers mailing and distribution, and this has been won by Hallmark, BSS and MRM (Multi Resource Marketing).

Under the terms of the contract, APS Group will provide a CO2e figure for each quote so that BBC customers have a way of measuring carbon emissions. The company measures greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) at the most stringent level (DEFRA scope 3), which includes business travel.

Another means of minimising the carbon impact adopted by APS is to print close to the point of distribution and it is in the process of setting up regional hubs close to BBC facilities.

The company will also run a number of road shows, in order to educate BBC staff on how to get the best out of the deal.

APS managing director Nick Snelson said: "The BBC presented us with a very complex set of print requirements ...  our ability to manage these complexities through a network of local suppliers will result in a more efficient service experience for the BBC."

Additionally, printing will be done using a minimum 50% recycled paper, vegetable-based inks and alcohol-free font solutions.

According to business services director Ann McLaughlin part of the pre-qualification process included questions about rebates or 'pay to play' type agreements between print managers and their suppliers in a bid to ensure BBC printing was 'above board'.

Earlier this year the company won a multimillion pound contract with the Scottish government.
