Adobe to offer PostScript RIP upgrade

Adobe has announced the first big upgrade to its PostScript RIP since the launch of version three in 1997.

The latest version includes direct printing from the latest PDFs, including PDF 1.5 and PDF/X.

It also has support for the latest version of JDF, to make it easier for OEMs to develop JDF-based workflows around the RIP. Upcoming image format JPEG 2000 is also supported.

With this version of PostScript we pushed the limits of RIP technology and created an ultra-fast implementation that further solidifies PDF integration within a modern print workflow, said print workflow products group general manager Don Walker.

Expanded support for JDF will have a lasting impact on the automation of digital workflows, said CAP Ventures associate director Jim Hamilton.

PDF version 1.5 was launched earlier this year with the release of Acrobat 6.0, although most pre-press firms were at the same time only just able to incorporate support for PDF 1.4 into Adobe-based workflows.
