Q&A: John Fry, production director, B&D Print Services

Leaving school 37 years ago at the tender age of 15, John Fry joined Graphic House in Preston as an apprentice printer.

Now production director at B&D Prints, the father to Charlotte and grandfather to Zach, enjoys a diverse range of hobbies outside his working day, including watching movies, wine, champagne, beer, reading, “the mighty Spurs”, as well as a good conspiracy theory. 

Why did you get into printing?

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with colouring in without going over the line and I was in awe of packaging. My mum explained it was printing, not colouring in. I was sold at age four

What would be your dream job?

Either an astronaut or a champagne and cheese taster

My corkscrew

The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band or maybe Pulp’s Different Class. Mind you there’s obviously Stanley Road (Paul Weller) and we mustn’t forget The Queen is Dead (The Smiths)...

What is the strangest job you’ve ever done?

Band security for Captain Sensible

What is your greatest ambition?

To still be doing my own stunts aged 100

That I will expire and still not know...

JDF, the way it was first described in hushed tones

It was a long time ago and I am still protecting the innocent

The 70s and most of the 80s

I have plenty

Printing the Olympic gold medal winners’ stamps
