PrintWeek, Fuji and IFS to produce unique IpexDaily

PrintWeek, Fujifilm, Intelligent Finishing Solutions (IFS) and Ipex organiser Informa have joined forces to produce the IpexDaily show newspaper live in the halls of next week’s event in a unique demonstration of web-fed inkjet magazine production.

“The IpexDaily really is unique, because as far as I know it’s the only show newspaper that is produced entirely live on site at a print show, so visitors can see the entire workflow, from creation to finished copies, all through exhibitor collaboration,” said Ipex event director Trevor Crawford.

Every day the PrintWeek editorial team will be trawling the halls for the latest show deals and product launches, which they will then write-up and layout on the IpexDaily stand (S5-F396). The PDF files will then be uploaded to Fuji’s XMF Remote job submission system and passed through to XMF Workflow, which will then automatically impose the IpexDaily.

XMF will then send the ripped files to Fuji’s Jet Press 540W inkjet web press – which will print 5,000-plus copies of the Daily on Crown Van Gelder Letsgo Universal (Pigment) 140gsm paper.

Finally, the Dailies will be finished on the Fuji stand using a nearline Lasermax unwind, cut and stack system and Horizon StitchLiner 6000, both manned by their UK distributor IFS.

While the print and post-press will be configured nearline, according to IFS joint managing director Bryan Godwyn the two systems can also be configured inline.

“We’re really excited about producing the IpexDaily, firstly because it’s the first show partnership between Fuji and Horizon, but secondly because it’s a great opportunity for printers to witness the benefits of high-volume reel-to-sheet production, which can generate incredible paper savings. In these days of innovate or die, it really is a great solution,” he added.

Visitors can see the IpexDaily being produced live from 2.30pm on each of the first five days of the show on the Fuji stand (S4-E330). As well as handling the IpexDaily on the Fuji stand, IFS will also be completing a number of other live jobs for Fuji on it’s own stand in the north hall (N3-D291).

“The Daily is the ideal product to demonstrate just-in-time digital production in a real world situation with real world challenges, which is our theme for the show,” said Fujifilm UK graphic systems managing director Keith Dalton.

“While our production schedule for the show will be extremely heavy, I think our biggest challenge next week is probably going to be keeping prying fingers off the Dailies.”
