PrintWeek Awards 2013 Luxury Packaging Printer of the Year - Beamglow

Beamglow is on a winning streak, having triumphed last year thanks to its high-quality work and technical prowess.

Category sponsor: EFI

This year, judges were wowed by "beautiful attention to details, fantastic quality on every part of the submission and impressive use of recycled materials. Beamglow certainly went the extra mile". Take the Bowmore Devils whisky cask, for which the team in St Ives, Cambridgeshire pulled out all the stops. Cartons were printed on a seven-colour press with two coating units, which put down two hits of red and black and three different anti-scuff matt coatings. Then copper foil stamping was used to ensure no ‘filling-in’ on the finer-type areas. The Macallan 1824 Sienna carton, meanwhile, showed the whisky and spirit sector can achieve a target of 40% recycled packaging by 2020 – and can do so without compromising the quality demanded by a very competitive market and achieved by a no-less competitive printer.

A finalist in packaging last year, ASG (UK) almost swung it this year thanks to a welter of hard-hitting, swishy products. These included the James Bond 50th Anniversary Box Set. The scale, prestige and hype surrounding the project presented challenges, but ASG triumphed: "Just exquisite; in any other year this probably would have won," said the judges.
