Paper manufacturers implement price increases

Idempapers has increased the price of all its speciality paper products by 7% as of 1 June.

The company manufactures the Idem brand of carbonless, label and poster papers and said it has incurred "significant increases in energy and raw material costs" during the past few months.

Arnaud De Brandt, marketing manager at Idempapers, said: "What we observe in general is a weak paper demand in Europe and in the US. The forecasts for economic growth are reduced.

"The balance between supply and demand on the pulp market remains tight even with a weak demand, and the situation looks very similar to the one we have lived with since the beginning of the year."

The company will raise the price of its speciality papers for labelling, release liner and poster applications, despite having previously implemented cost-reduction programmes, in an attempt to accommodate rising costs.

The Belgium-based business is the former carbonless paper division of Arjowiggins, which was sold in an MBO on 1 October last year.

Idempapers is now completely independent and has two plants in Belgium. Its two core businesses are carbonless papers and technical papers.

Elsewhere, M-real has also raised the price of its folding boxboard by between 7 – 9% as of 1 July.

The company said the increase is a result of cost inflation, which has been "higher than estimated".

M-real manufactures fibre paperboard that is used for beauty and healthcare products, while its paper products are used for speciality applications.
