Educational Printing Services diversifies business with EPS Finishing launch

Educational Printing Services has diversified its service offering by launching a new finishing division, EPS Finishing, in a bid to improve sales during its quieter months.

The Blackburn-based business made the move into finishing following the closure of Accrington-based Dale Print Finishers last year.

According to EPS director Nick Roberts, the company was in the market for a new guillotine before entering into a dialogue with Dale Print Finishers managing director Barry Burns during the company's liquidation.

"I spoke with Barry regarding the sale of their guillotine but I soon decided that it made sense to take on the skilled staff and equipment they had as well," he said.

EPS took on two key staff from Dale Print Finishers as well as two MBO folders and a six-station Muller Martini binder.

This complements kit that includes a Heidelberg Stahlfolder, a Schneider Senator guillotine; Horizon 30 station automated booklet maker and a Bourg 30 Station booklet maker.

EPS Finishing now operates from the same 4,460sqm as Educational Printing Services.

The printing division produces around 2m exercise books for nearly 30,000 schools nationwide each year. It also offers pupil booklets, pupil diaries and planners.

The launch of EPS Finishing caps an eventful two years for director Nick Roberts.

He was involved in a near-fatal car crash in September 2010 that left him with a fractured skull, eye socket and neck, a full set of broken ribs on his right, a broken wrist and a broken arm.

Roberts also suffered a torn aorta and a collapsed lung during the accident but thanks the North West Air Ambulance.

"The air ambulance saved my life and now I have bounced back," he added.
