The Manchester-headquartered firm, which also has branches in Newcastle upon Tyne, Castleford and Birmingham and supplies a raft of wide-format materials including vinyl, laminates and banner material to the trade, completed its purchase of Wakefield, Yorkshire-based POS Plastics last week.
POS Plastics sells high-quality plastic sheets from manufacturers including 3A Composites, Staufen and Klockner as well self-adhesives from JAC.
Pyramid head of sales and marketing Neil McCarthy told PrintWeek that the acquisition will enable Pyramid to gain a presence in the industrial plastics market.
“We’ve known POS Plastics for quite a long time. It’s a little bit different to what we’re used to doing – they do quite a bit of fabrication and things like that whereas we actively sell flat sheets to fabricators and printers,” he said.
Pyramid managing director Dennis Morgan added POS Plastics will benefit from the support of a larger company and the ability to expand the product range that it can offer to its customers.
“We can now give POS Plastics’ customers the option to buy a much larger range of digital roll and flat sheet products,” he said.
“The acquisition reinforces our strategy of diversifying the group into areas aligned to our core retail display market but giving us specialist expertise in what we class as the growth area of industrial plastics.”
James Shannon, who headed up POS Plastics, will continue as sales manager of the business, which will retain its branding and become a trading division of Pyramid.
He said: “Having the option to sell an enhanced range of products to our customer base will ensure the business continues to grow for many years to come, and with the backing of Pyramid in the form of marketing and logistics support I’m confident we can become an integral part of the group.”
McCarthy said “the majority” of POS Plastics’ six staff have been taken on by Pyramid and have relocated around 10 miles across from Wakefield to Pyramid’s Castleford facility, taking the group’s overall headcount up to 130.
POS Plastics’ turnover was around £1m while Pyramid’s turnover was around £45m prior to the acquisition.
In 2013 Pyramid acquired Leeds-based self-adhesive vinyl distributor Sydney Beaumont. Last year the group invested in a CCM Premier 168 guillotine to add to its fleet of more than 30 machines that it uses for the conversion of materials.
