BFS invests in UK manufacturing

BFS Pressroom Solutions has celebrated its first decade of rubber roller manufacturing with a further expansion of its offering.

The firm has invested in new engineering machinery and taken on two further engineers at its Haverhill factory so it can manufacture its own metal cores.

“This means we’re not reliant on subcontractors, so we can offer a faster turnaround,” said managing director Robin Hope. “Service and turnaround times are key for our customers.”

BFS began manufacturing rubber rollers in 2007, when it acquired Tyke Rollers. At the beginning the roller business had five employees, but this has subsequently been expanded to 22.

The firm now claims a leading position in rubber roller manufacturing for the UK printing industry. It also has a partnership with German roller manufacturer Westland, and manufactures the Westland compound under licence in the UK.

Family-run BFS employs 52 staff in total and overall sales have grown to around £5m, with some £2m of that relating to rollers.

“We are investing in the UK, whereas international roller companies are pulling out,” Hope added. “We’re quite proud about it and it’s nice to have something positive to say at the moment.”

The firm’s product range includes blankets, inks, UV lamps, folder parts and other pressroom sundries. Its other operations are located in Reading and Leighton Buzzard.
