Me & my: Compose InkScript

Tony Edmonds, director of Azimuth Print in Chipping Sodbury, relates how this low-cost system has improved output and reduced waste.

Describe your business
Azimuth is an internet-based print business, with the latest offset presses and digital production supported by full design facilities as well as extensive finishing services. We cover just about anything the modern customer needs, from business cards to full-colour brochures, as well as large-format posters and exhibition display modules.

What does InkScript do?
It provides ink profiles for our Heidelberg SM 52 presses.

Why did you choose this particular product?
It has a very attractive price tag and it offers the same functionality as its competitors.

Did you look at any other similar products?
Yes, we looked at Heidelberg’s CIP3 product.

Why did you make the purchase?
We purchased InkScript to increase productivity and to reduce waste.

What features do you particularly like?
The profiles work well and they allow for very quick makeready times.

Is there anything that you dislike?
No.

Is there anything that you wish it had that it doesn’t?
Nothing that I can think of.

How fast is it?
It’s very, very fast, especially when it’s hardwired to the press.

How reliable is it?
We haven’t had any problems with it to date.

What’s the quality like?
It’s excellent. It would be hard to improve upon.

How easy is it to use?
Everything takes place in the background, so it’s very easy.

How much time or money has it saved?
Every makeready is shorter by at least 10 minutes and it has cut paper waste by 15% on the average job.

Has it won you any new work?
No.

Would you say that it offers value for money?
It offers excellent value for money; it’s cheaper than its competitors, but it’s just as efficient.

Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?
None whatsoever.

What about the pre- and after-sales service?
It was very good. Any enhancement are installed by Compose by dialling into our computers and making the adjustments.

Who do you think the machine is right for?
Any printer who is currently setting ducts manually.

Under what circumstances would you buy another?
We have no need to buy another one as it can supply settings for many presses.

Supplier’s response
Kevin Caughtry, UK and Ireland sales manager at Compose, says: "Tony is clearly very pleased with InkScript and the cost savings it delivers to his production process. I’m surprised that with the rising cost of paper – the second major expense to printers after employees – that more printers still do not have CIP3 data online to the press, or closed-loop systems. Our solutions are a fraction of the cost of those being offered by the major pre-press and press manufacturers."
