Students set up estimator tool

Two Irish students have launched a print estimating tool called Print Estimator, which produces commercial and sign printing estimates.

The Windows-based software package is not database driven and as such is limited to pre-programmed options.

It currently features 40 paper types, 20 envelope types, six litho presses, five digital presses, 10 finishing machines and four laminating options, as well as multi-factor guillotine set-up and more than 20 sign materials.

Sign jobs are priced based on the cost per square metre of the substrate and ink. The software includes an imperial to metric converter.

The project was the brainchild of SME printer Brendan Dooley, who has passed it on to his son Simon and daughter Lisa, who is studying at Dublin Institute of Technology.
