BPIF welcomes new business secretary

The BPIF has welcomed the appointment of Sajid Javid as the new business secretary.

Javid is expected to be welcomed by SMEs and has so far pledged to cut red tape and reform union laws so that industrial action in the private sector requires a mandate of 50% of those entitled to vote.

A second tighter requirement applies to the public sector: 40% of those entitled to vote must vote in favour of action for it to go ahead.

BPIF chief executive Charles Jarrold said Javid, a former banker from a working class background, “brings a strong reputation, and a business background, and a great deal of experience to this role, so it's a welcome appointment”.

He said the BPIF was particularly interested in the Conservatives’ commitment to apprenticeships.

On the union proposals Jarrold said: “In the recent past, the threat of strike action was a key tool used in negotiations in our sector.  I don't think that was to the benefit of anyone, and it's good that the sector has modernised and changed, so those days are behind us.

“In reality, I don't believe these proposals would have made much difference then, and there's now a keener understanding of economic realities, and sometimes the need to accept unpalatable decisions in the interest of staying in business.

“These proposals appear to be aimed in particular at the public sector, but to the extent that they apply to print they don't appear unreasonable.”

The BPIF is sending its Priorities for Print to all incoming MP's. Jarrold said the federation was looking forward to working with the new government.
