Star product: Arjowiggins Cyclus

A 100%-recycled grade said to offer high quality and texture.

What is it?

Cyclus is a range of 100%-recycled coated and uncoated papers in a choice of grades and weights. Its manufacturer Arjowiggins Graphic Papers claims they have a unique finish and appearance. “Cyclus offers superb quality, a beautiful texture and a unique subtle shade,” says Andy Smith, key account manager at Arjowiggins Graphic.

The company also places great emphasis on the environmental credentials of the paper’s recycled manufacture and usage.

Most of the grades are intended for offset printing, but there is also a laser paper for pre-printing, an office/copier grade that will accept inkjet as well as dry toner, and matching envelope types.

When was it launched?

The range dates back to the early 2000s when it was introduced as one of the first 100% recycled papers by Danish manufacturer Dalum Papir. The Dalum mill was purchased by Arjowiggins in 2007 and closed in 2012: Cyclus production was transferred to France , at the Besse-sur-Braye and Le Bourray mills.

What’s the range?

In the UK there are currently two Cyclus papers: Cyclus Offset, a 100%-recycled FSC-certified uncoated natural white paper; and CyclusPrint, a 100%-recycled certified matt coated natural white fine printing available in SRA1, SRA2, B1 and B2 sizes. Grammages range from 70 to 350gsm. These are also available in reels.

What are the applications?

The Offset and Print grades are intended for catalogues, stationery, magazines, promotional print, brochures, posters, direct mail, report and accounts, etc.

They are suited to sheetfed offset, heatset web offset and narrow web offset presses.

Weights up to 160gsm are suited to dry toner and HP Indigo digital print as well, says Smith. “We are a member of the HP Indigo Preferred Media partner programme, our papers have been certified by HP and we provide paper for the HP sales demo trainings at the Indigo Experience centre in Barcelona.

“We have close relationships with Ricoh as well: we provide paper for Ricoh Demo Centre in Telford UK. Cyclus has been approved by all dry toner OEMs. ICC profiles are available upon request.”

How green is it?

Arjowiggins stresses the environmental credentials of the range, which has certifications from FSC (for recycled), EU Ecolabel, Nordic Ecolabel and Blue Angel. It complies with ISO 14001 (for environmental management), 9001 (quality management) and 50001 (energy management). Cyclus was one of the winners of WWF’s Environmental Paper Awards 2016 in the category Best Environmental Performance Paper Brands.

Not only is the fibre 100%-recycled, but all of the residuals of manufacture (and deinking) are reused for cement production, fertiliser and district heating. Bio fuel (woodchip) is used to make steam and electrical energy.

In 2012 Arjowiggins told PrintWeek that “Manufacturing one tonne of 100% recycled paper (relating to Cyclus) emits 428kg of CO2 compared to 800kg emissions per tonne of non-recycled paper.”

What’s the USP?

Apart from the environmental aspects, Arjowiggins stresses printability for these papers, naturally, and also appearance. The marketing message for the offset paper for instance says: “The paper accentuates the creative message, where touch and feel combine with – and support – the visual image.”

What support is available?

Like some other suppliers, Arjowiggins has put an environmental calculator on its Cyclus website, where you can predict savings on water, CO2/greenhouse, energy, wood usage and landfill usage.

Smith says: “All customers are entitled to an Environmental Benefit statement (EBS) which details the environmental savings they have made by using Cyclus 100% recycled paper in terms of water, energy, Co2 emissions, landfill and wood for any specific print job. This can then be printed on the print job or used as part of the customers CSR to demonstrate their commitment to the environment.”

What does it cost?

This is set by stockists, says Smith. These are Antalis, Premier Paper and Paperback in the UK, but typical prices for packet wrapped B2 Offset 140gsm are around £184 per 1,000 sheets; £238 per 1,000 sheets for B1 Print 100gsm.
