Two brand-new LED-UV machines from Japanese manufacturer Mimaki have been unveiled.

Mimaki’s UK and Ireland distributor Hybrid Services said the UCJV330-160, an upgrade to Mimaki’s 300-series production printers, is a roll-to-roll UV printer-cutter capable of 28sqm/hr production in four colours, or 18sqm/hr with white and clear inks, with which it comes as standard.

This offers an upgrade on its predecessor, the UCJV300-160, which could reach speeds of 25.8sqm/hr and 13.4sqm/hr respectively in draft mode.

Built to print on a wide range of substrates, translucent, transparent and coloured materials, PET, polyurethane and resin films, the 330-160 can also build up 2.5D print, watermarks or five-layer prints.

Unveiled alongside the 330-160 was the latest addition to Mimaki’s entry-level 100-series, the UJV100-160Plus.

A straight upgrade to the extant UJV100-160, the 100-160Plus has been upgraded to consume around a quarter of the power as the 100-160, at just 0.5kW.

Further upgrades include a new ink-saving function, which Mimaki said will save printers up to 50% of the ink volume while maintaining colour balance, all set through Mimaki’s RasterLink 7 software.

Arjen Evertse, Mimaki Europe’s general sales manager, said the two releases were aimed at supporting the growing number of printers looking to UV-LED as a low-energy print technology.

He said: “The pressing need to be more sustainable, as well as the recent pressures associated with rising energy prices, has accelerated the industry-wide need to adopt UV technology.

“UV printing requires considerably less energy throughout the printing process than other technologies, not least due to the fact that LED-UV inks cure instantly. This both improves the printer’s environmental impact but also saves on production costs and delivery times.”

Hybrid sales director Andrew Gregory said the new arrivals were hotly anticipated, pointing to Mimaki’s drive for lower running costs and higher productivity as particularly welcome features.

He told Printweek: “Hybrid anticipates having demonstration units of both models available for customers to view later this autumn, and information on launch events will be coming soon.

“The 100 Series offers an ideal solution for companies taking their first steps in UV roll-to-roll printing, enabling businesses with existing complementary print technologies to diversify and expand their product offering.

“The 330 Series offers a significant increase in productivity and caters for companies with higher production requirements who can benefit from the machine’s ability to deliver fast turnaround times, thanks to its instantly dry ink.”

Pricing has not yet been disclosed.
