New year predictions: Mike Golding, TCL Packaging

Mike Golding, managing director of TCL Packaging, reflects on a year of huge investment and urges the industry to market its environmental credentials better in 2015.

What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?

Not too many phone calls from customers at our Christmas party this year.

What trend (business or technology) do you think 2014 will be remembered for?

Not so much a trend but an alignment of planets that provided the change of FIR regulations taking place during the pre-Christmas rush giving the biggest capacity crunch of my time in the industry.

What do you think will represent the single biggest opportunity for printers in 2015 and why?

Hopefully, that customers realise from the above that security of supply is of real value. And immigration: you can’t beat the presence of a lot of extra mouths and a diverse population to boost demand into the food industry supply chain.

What do you think will represent the single biggest threat for printers in 2015 and why?

I don’t see any major threats on the horizon for 2015. The usual suspects seem set fairish as long as quality and service remain a priority. Low commodity prices seem sure for a while and overcapacity is not a current issue.

What’s the one thing that the industry should do more of, or do better, in 2015?

It needs to market its green credentials much better. Flexible packaging is the low environmental impact hygienic wrapping. Helping consumers to recycle it better will only add to its appeal.

What was your biggest disappointment in 2014?

My golf handicap increased further due to lack of practice time.

What was your highlight of 2014?

Opening our new plant in Telford and moving all our operations to it, giving us the opportunity to efficiently grow our business. It has had a transformational effect on TCL.

What are your hopes for 2015?

Stability and a reduced golf handicap.

What was the most important thing that you learnt in 2014?

That a diverse customer base is a godsend to be cherished, because customers make decisions without understanding their consequence.

What if anything will you do differently in 2015?

Focus on making money rather than spending it; 2014 was a year of huge investment in the future for TCL and now it’s time for us and our customers to benefit from it.

What’s your favourite Christmas cracker joke?

Q: What did Adam say to his wife the day before Christmas?
A: It's Christmas Eve

Are you making any new year’s resolutions? If so, what?

Sorry to say, I don’t make them. I doubt my own resolve.

Who will win the Rugby World Cup in 2015?

I didn’t know there was one. All I know about the game is that my friends who participated in their youth all now look very ugly.
