Mail Logistics, based in West London, is understood to have approached customers offering to supply letters for delivery to the Royal Mail.
One of the customers that used the company was the Open University. A spokeswoman said that pieces of course literature sent mostly to European students had failed to reach their destination.
The Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) is already investigating the matter and has held a meeting with publishers affected, although it wouldnt name them.
