US unions hit out at Schawk

Unions in the US have vented their anger at packaging pre-press giant Schawk claiming it has shown anti-worker actions toward its international workforce.

Delegates gathered at the Union Network International (UNI) congress in Chicago (pictured) with more than 100 attending the picket line outside Schawk's office in the city. They were joined by Amicus GPMS general secretary Tony Dubbins.

In an open letter to the company's president David Schawk, UNI general secretary Philip Jennings claims that the firm has moved production in New York to a non-union facility with half the workforce laid off. It followed the merger with Seven Worldwide.

"UNI urges you to re-examine your decisions and to open up a dialogue," wrote Jennings.

Redundancies at the group's European operation were made this summer, with 80 jobs cut and two sites closed.
