Turn pages of 700-year-old 'digital Koran'

A digital reproduction of the Koran, believed to be the first Islamic manuscript to be available online, is now available from the British Library.

The 700-year-old copy, known as Sultan Baybars Koran, is regarded as a masterpiece of Islamic calligraphy. It has been created digitally as part of the librarys "Turning The Pages Initiative".

"The aim is for people to be able to view the treasure without damaging the originals," said British Library creative projects director Clive Izard.

The project was made possible by a donation from charitable organisation, the Noon Foundation.

Armadillo Systems filmed the pages being turned, before building a 3D model accurate to the millimetre, whose page turn replicates how the pages look and feel when you turn them in real life.
