Transcontinental to close Quebec printing plant

Montreal-based Transcontinental said this week it will close its printing plant in LaSalle, Quebec next month, laying off 150.

"The printing industry is undergoing a major transformation that is altering supply and demand. Given the capacity and potential of our network, we have concluded that we have excess production capacity in relation to market demand," Transcontinental senior VP Marian Kerr said in a statement.

"In order for Transcontinental to remain competitive in this industry under pressure and get the most out of its most efficient equipment, we have had to make the difficult decision to terminate our printing operations at LaSalle."

Transcontinental chief communications officer Sylvain Morissette later explained to PrintWeek, "Our printing facility in LaSalle mainly produces flyers for retailers. The production will be moved to other TC Transcontinental Printing facilities. We have not decided if some equipment will be moved for the moment."

This past March, Transcontinental announced the closing of two of the six printing facilities it acquired in an asset swap with Quad/Graphics announced in 2011, Those closures, in Nova Scotia and Montréal, resulted in the layoff of some 500 employees.
