Survey proves good print buyers save companies billions in print costs

American print buyers collectively saved their employers $11.9bn (7.7bn) on their print costs in 2007 and are set to save over $13bn in 2008, according to a new report.

The report, based on surveys conducted by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) professor emeritus Frank Romano, showed that knowledgeable print buyers saved their organisations around 7% on their annual print spend.

Margie Dana, founder of US-based Print Buyers International (PBI), said: "We've known for years that professional print and media buyers are responsible for significant savings within their organisations.

"This survey data from Frank Romano confirms it and this is why PBI's Print Media Professional certification program is so important. It allows print buyers to be re-educated about new printing methods and practices, and it refines and sharpens their procurement skills."

According to Romano's surveys, professional print buyers saved money on printer selection, paper choices and buying practices, printing processes, efficient finished sizes and paginations, optimum print runs, distribution, as well as other areas such as online file delivery.

PBI launched its Print Media Professional Certification Program at its third annual Print Buyers Conference in Boston last month.
