Study to analyse impact of print plates on environment

A study into the environmental impact of printing plates has been launched to help printers make a more informed choice when purchasing plates.

The study has been organised by consulting company J Zarwan Partners and has already received support from Fujifilm and Kodak.

It analyses the environmental effect of plates on chemistry, energy, water and waste, and the impact between different categories of plates.

Author of the report and J Zarwan Partners president John Zarwan said: "While environmental considerations are only one factor in choice of a plate, it is important to be aware of the differences and the amount of chemistry and other waste involved."

He said it was important to remember that most plates work well in the correct application and that no single solution is appropriate for every printer.

"Plates have different characteristics on press, different run length capabilities, and are not suitable for all applications."

Fujifilm Graphic Systems marketing manager UK Graham Leeson said he was sure the report would be of huge value to printers and print buyers worldwide.

Kevin Cazabon, director current solutions commercial and publishing, Kodak's Graphic Communications Group, said: "A study that looks at the key technologies and plates on the market from an environmental point of view is critical for printers to achieve the necessary awareness in order to make the most informed choice when striving to be a greener printer."
