Springfield Solutions has announced its biggest expansion and investment project yet including a new digital press and additional units for warehousing and raw materials.

The Hull-based labels specialist said it had enjoyed double-digit growth since laying the foundations for its previous major investment push in 2017.

Its new ‘Project 21’ plans include doubling the size of its logistics and raw materials space with an additional 372sqm across two new units, with the new space going live this month.

The business is also adding a Screen Truepress Jet L350+LM low migration ink digital press – the firm’s fifth digital press – and an AB Graphic Digicon Series 3 inline device, as well as an AB Graphic Omega SRI label finishing line.

“The new kit will be in addition to our existing setup and offer us 20-25% additional capacity” explained joint managing director Matt Dass, who said the final spend on the expansion was “fluid at the moment”.

The firm is also in discussions with Screen about the manufacturer’s next-generation SAI-series for a future date, “and hope to deliver another world first,” Dass said.

“Project 21 will see the largest investment in people, equipment and buildings that the business has ever made, and I’m thrilled to be part of a team who will deliver the next chapter in the history of Springfield.”

Springfield said that Project 21 would encompass every area of the business, and includes additional personnel, with seven people already recruited and a further five roles planned.

The firm was founded by Albert Dass in 1975. It made the move into digital printing in 1996, and its well-established services include digitally-printed self-adhesive labels, brand management and packaging mock-ups. The business printed more than 187m labels last year.

Customers include beauty brands, craft brewers, healthcare and industrial businesses.

Joint managing director, Dennis Ebeltoft said the fresh expansion project was “an opportunity to manage our immense growth”.

“This growth has occurred over the past year by building our capacity and creating new opportunities for the business,” he said.

“As joint managing director of operations, to me, Project 21 means increased opportunities for future innovation and world first achievements.”

The firm has 82 staff at the main Springfield business and 16 at marketing wing Eon Visual Media. Turnover was not disclosed.
