Skymark expands with 10m spend

Packaging printer Skymark plans to double its turnover in two years after spending 10m on new equipment and creating 70 jobs.

The company suffered a major fire at its Leominster, Herefordshire, site last year, which destroyed the facility. However, Skymark has now installed a range of new equipment at its Scunthorpe site in order to counter the loss.

This includes a 1,300mm Fisher & Krecke 16s with Smart GPS (graphics positioning system), which was installed in late 2009, while a 1,650mm Uteco Emerald 810 will be installed this week. A second Fisher & Krecke 1,500mm 14s with Smart GPS, is set to follow in May.

The remainder of the £10m investment is made up of site expansion and a Combi 3000 laminator.

According to sales development manager Dan Richards, the investment will set the company up for the future, as well as returning lost capacity. He said he hoped it would double the group's estimated turnover of £32m in 2010 by 2012.

"We do a lot of work in the hygiene market sector and we see massive growth in this and the laminate market," he added.

"Customers are demanding more and more printed films, which is why we have invested in wider presses. It is a trend we see and we want to invest early and expand the versatility in what we do."

As part of the expansion, the company, which employs around 200 staff, has created 70 new roles – 50 of which have already been filled.
