The recycled content of newsprint consumed by UK newspaper publishers is just ahead of government targets, according to audit figures for the second half of 2000.
The audit, which was carried out by Forest Industries Intelligence, shows that the amount of waste paper used in UK newspapers as a percentage total of newsprint consumed was 62.6% for the period, and amounted to 60.3% for the whole year.
The amount of waste paper consumed by UK newsprint producers as a proportion of production was 109% for the six-month period and 106.1% for the year.
The Government, UK newspapers and newsprint manufacturers agreed a target of 60% recycled fibre content in April 2000, which will be subject to review at the end of 2001.
