QTI has donated its Master Tools for Masterpieces mural to the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics in Germany.
The mural was painted by Wisconsin artist Will Kolstad in the PrintCity hall during the show. Kolstad started work on 16 May, and spent ten to 12 hours per day on the mural until he completed it on Monday (22 May).
The first day of the show was unnerving, he said. I usually work in a studio with no noise, but here there were thousands of people walking behind me. It took a day to get used to it, then it became more and more fun.
The 4.5m wide by 2.4m high mural includes an image of Johannes Gutenberg and elements of modern printing technology. Kolstad said he took out every book I could on Gutenberg before he came up with a final list of around ten drawings. The final design was approved after consultation with QTI management. They didnt change any thing from my final drawing, said Kolstad.
The mural will be on show at QTIs stand until Drupa ends on 31 May, then it will be rolled up and delivered to Fraunhofer Institutes campus in Darmstadt.
