Dubbed as the industrys "cabinet", the alliance was formed following an initial approach made by Picon and the BAPC to the BPIF last June (PrintWeek, 15 June 2001). Its aim was to form a collective voice to "promote and represent the printing industry to the world at large".
Representatives from Picon, BAPC, BPIF, GPMU, EFTA, Screen Printing Association, PGC NTO, IOP, and the media attended the meeting chaired by Picon chairman Tim Webb.
Webb kicked off the proceedings by explaining that the body would address "only those issues likely to have a major impact on the market and where a suitable action plan cannot realistically be provided by any one body in isolation".
Unlike the Printing Industry Forum, being spearheaded by the BPIF, the alliance would not be a "tasking body" dealing with issues such as "competitiveness and productivity" Webb said.
The focus of much of the discussion was training and industry image. All members were agreed that the establishment of a viable SSC (Sector Skills Council) was vital but the "jury was still out" on the introduction of a training levy.
The alliance will meet twice a year, or more if a particular issue demands it, and the chairmanship will rotate every six months.
