Newgate's sales director (Publishing) Stephanie Bose said the firm had a number of enquiries from customers regarding the standard, and decided to try and attain certification for itself.
"We saw it as an opportunity to show that we are an environmentally aware company," said Bose.
FSC (UK) advisory service manager Amy Mulkern said there has been considerable growth in the number of firms applying for chain of custody. "Since April this year we have seen a global growth of 37% across the paper and print industry," she said.
Newgate has already used the FSC mixed sources logo on the cover of the book Kensuke's Kingdom, which was one of the first fully FSC certified books to be published (pictured). It printed the covers under its FSC chain of custody.
The firm employs 37 staff and has a turnover of just under 5m. Its clients include publishers Random House, Egmont Books, Walker Books and Methuen Publishing.
