MPG Books Group invests in new Horizon finishing kit

MPG Books Group has invested in two Horizon BQ470 automated four-clamp binders for its Bodmin-based digital division.

The machines, which were supplied by Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS), have been installed at MPG Digital Solutions, where the company’s print-on-demand operation is based, with one running conventional EVA glue and the other running EVA and PUR. Both are equipped with variable software technology that enables each clamp to be set up individually.

MPG has also installed a Horizon HT30 robotic three-side trimmer and an HT80 automated three-knife trimmer, which is JDF-compatible using the pXnet bindery management system.

General manager Dennis Tilley said that the company had chosen the binder for its ease of use, flexibility and quality of the bind.

He added: "It was very important to be able to continually run books of different sizes – even in runs of one – and the variable software allows us to do this seamlessly. The speed of set up and efficiency of process is very important."

Tilley said that the HT80 three-knife trimmer and HT30 three-side trimmer had bought "flexibility and efficiency" to the digital finishing department.

"The HT80 helps to rationalise ultra short-run book production and takes advantage of our ability to batch process," he added.
