Lschers for UKHO chart work

The Governments UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is hoping to revolutionise production of charts and navigation material after installing three Lscher units, including the UKs first FleXPose! 75.

The chemical-free flexo platesetter replaces a letterpress machine and will be used to produce around 100 stamps per day for making manual chart corrections.

The investment, through dealer Turning Point Technologies, forms a "step change in technology giving flexibility and reduced lead times," said UKHO production manager Paul Kelly.

Two XPose! 160 platesetters with plate-handling systems, which can produce up to 46 plates an hour, will image plates for 10,000-11,000 print runs per year of varying lengths.

The UKHO prints around 4m charts and other navigation items every year.
