Leipa ready to roll with 218m PM4 paper maker

Leipa Georg Leinfelders new 218m (e330m) PM4 paper machine has completed commissioning and has produced its first saleable lightweight coated (LWC) paper (PrintWeek, 12 August).

The German recycled paper manufacturer invited suppliers, customers and local VIPs to the official inauguration of the production line at its Schwedt mill.

The project cost 308m, making it the largest single exercise undertaken by Brandenburg, and the biggest venture within the Leipa Group.

The mill has nearly trebled its previous 160,000 tonnes per year capacity with the addition of PM4, which itself can produce 300,000 tonnes per year.

PM4 offers a trim-width of 805cm and a top speed of 1,800m per minute. The firm claims that its advanced refining processes will make it one of the first producers of 100% wastepaper based high-gloss LWC paper.

PM4 will produce a wide range of LWC papers under the brand name of Leipa ultraMag, in weights of 57-65gsm initially, but following an optimisation phase this will be increased to 48-65gsm in gloss and semi-gloss finish.
