KPG reveals first UK flexo site

Lancastrian Labels has become the first UK printer to use Kodak Polychrome Graphics Flexcel Flexographic plates.

The deal, worth around 40,000 per year, signals a shift to exclusive use of KPG consumables for the Liverpool-based printer.

John Bambery, managing director of Lancastrian Labels, said that KPG had won the contract because of its after-sales support.

"It is a distinct advantage to deal directly with the manufacturer. We have got better technical backup because we are dealing direct," he said.

He added that he would consider upgrading to CTP technology in the coming years, but for the moment he did not feel it necessary.

"We are not a trade house, so we don't change plates as often as for some other applications," he said.

The firm had previously used consumables from a variety of suppliers, including DuPont and BASF.

KPG UK marketing director Pat Holloway said that at least three other companies had either bought the Flexcel plate or were testing the technology.

"Because we've got that customer base out there, it's not so hard to tell our customers that we're moving into this area. It's a logical move for us, as we're in the plate business already," he said.
