Killer App: Shortlist rubber cover

Polestar has teamed up with Celloglas to help create a special textured cover for The Amazing Spider-Man issue of ShortList magazine, which hit the streets on 5 July.

What did the job entail?

The texture was the result of numerous tests and trials co-ordinated and overseen by ShortList Media production director Ken Moreton, the innovations team at Polestar Sheffield, headed by Jeff White, and Celloglas.

Text pages were printed at Polestar Sheffield, on its Cerutti presses, while the cover was handled by Polestar Chantry using its Manroland Rotoman N press.

How was it produced?
The cover was produced using a Celloscreen high-build spot UV varnish, which was applied on its Sakurai Maestro screen press. This was done in a bid to emulate the rubberised effect of Spider-Man’s costume in varnish by breaking down the details of the pattern in the suit.

What challenges were overcome?
According to Celloglas sales director Steve Middleton, a considerable amount of preparation and testing was required to produce the cover.

"Recently, we have been working very closely with customer services director Jeff White and his innovations team at Polestar Sheffield on some very challenging projects," he added.

What was the feedback?
ShortList Media production director Ken Moreton, said: "We are delighted that our partnership with Polestar UK produced such a well-executed and innovative cover.

"The team at Polestar collaborated closely with us at all stages of the process to ensure that the finished result looked – and felt! – as good as it did."
