Glasgow City Council has put its printing services out to tender as it "goes down the best value route" for all of its services.
Head of PR John Brown said the printing sector was becoming very competitive, which had forced the council to seek expressions of interest for the purchase of its printworks service and the provision of a design, print and copying service.
The council has had around 20 expressions of interest and will send a more detailed questionnaire to between four and six suppliers that they choose for the next stage. It aims to start new contracts on 1 May.
The printworks employs around 40 staff and its budgeted sales are 2m-2.5m.
It is believed that GPMU members have met to discuss the councils proposals.
Last year (PrintWeek, 25 February 2000), Glasgow City Council decided to keep the printworks open for a further year after months of uncertainty.
